In accordance with the transmission of the New Testament, Jesus Christ was born into a Jewish family, the son of Mary married to him. Given him the name Jesus. Joseph was a carpenter by profession, and according to the Gospel of Matthew and Luke, a descendant of King David (the differences in the genealogy of Jesus, the relationship existing between the Evangelists, is explained by the Hebrew law and custom lewiratu - Genesis / Deuteronomy r.25, 5-6). According to the Gospel of Matthew and Luke, the only letters in the New Testament, which contain information about conception and birth of Jesus, was conceived not by Joseph but by the Holy Spirit in Mary's womb (cf. Lk 1:35 and Mt 1.18).

Luke and Matthew are consistent about the fact that Jesus was born in the village of Bethlehem, near Jerusalem. Evangelists give different details of the circumstances of his birth. According to the Gospel of Luke, Joseph and his wife Maria went to the census ordered by the Roman emperor Octavian Augustus, and when they reached there, Mary gave birth to Jesus (cf. Lk 2,1-7). Like every Jewish male child, Jesus was circumcised on the eighth day after birth. After childbirth, which - according to the Gospel of Luke - was in poor barn (or cave), at an unspecified time closer to the family returned to Nazareth, a small village in Galilee. According to the Gospel of Matthew at the instigation of the angel who appeared to Joseph in a dream, the family fled to Egypt to escape Herod's massacre organized by the infants. After Herod's death Joseph and Mary went to Galilee, and lived in Nazareth.
