The word angel penetrated the Polish language from Czech, who owes him the mission of Cyril and Methodius. Originally comes from the Greek word ἄγγελος (Angelos, according to the pronunciation of Byzantine ánhielos), originally meaning "messenger." In the Old Testament of the Bible similar spiritual beings are called in Hebrew מלאך, mal'ach - which also means "messenger."

The first images of angels existed in ancient Egypt and Babylonia. In the religions of civilization were a whole host of ghosts and beings, who are intermediaries between gods and man. Often depicted them as winged animals with human faces. Ancient angels attributed to some kind of flesh, which is confirmed by the apocryphal Book of Enoch. Angelo occur frequently in the Old Testament (eg Gen. 3, 24; prophetic books). But the Bible does not say much about the nature and types of these entities. More information can be found in kabbalistic writings and apokryfach. Christianity, belief in angels took over from Judaism. In the early centuries among the Fathers of the Church there was some dispute as to the nature of these entities. Such as Gregory Nazianzen, John of Damascus and Basil imagine angels as beings eteryczno-fire. Even the Council of Nicaea II in 787 was attributed to their subtle body. Ultimately, this issue was decided St. St. Augustine: "Angel is a function, not nature. You ask what it's called this nature? - Spirit. You ask about the function? - Angel. For this is what is spirit, and by what fills, is an angel" (St. Augustine, Enarratio in Psalmos, 103,1,15: PL 37, 1348-49; cf. CCC 329).

Angels also play an important role in Islam. Faith is not a part of the dogma of this religion. In Islam, it is claimed that the angels were created by God with fire, stay in heaven and their main task is to serve for his creator. Fullness of the function of the messengers, protect people and writes down all their deeds. The Koran was dictated to Mohammed by the angel Dżibrila. In Islamic theology refers primarily Dżibrila, Malik (guardian of the fires of hell), Izra'ila (angel of death), Nakira and Munkara, Haruta, and Maruta, Mika'ila and Azrafaela. The only angel who refused to obey God is Iblis, also called Satan
